Explosions rock science room at Osaka school

OSAKA, Japan - Photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter on Jan. 24, 2012, shows window frames of a science room after explosions there at Kiyoe Elementary School in Suminoe Ward in Osaka City. A fire broke out at the school the same day after a string of explosions in the science room, prompting 250 pupils and teachers to evacuate the school, but no injuries were reported, police and firefighters said.

Police arrest Ichihashi, suspect in murder of British woman

OSAKA, Japan - Press gather in front of Suminoe Police Station in Osaka where Tatsuya Ichihashi, the suspect in the 2007 murder of British language school teacher Lindsay Hawker, was arrested after a fingerprint check confirmed his identity on Nov. 10, 2009. Ichihashi, 30, had been wanted on a technical charge of abandoning the body of Hawker, who was 22 at the time of her death, at his apartment in Chiba Prefecture.

Huge glass dome set on Osaka's museum

OSAKA, Japan - Cranes set a huge glass dome on the new Osaka Maritime Museum being built in Suminoe Ward, facing Osaka Bay, on Nov. 7. The dome, with a diameter of 70 meters, weighs 1,200 tons and contains 4,800 sheets of glass. The museum is scheduled to open next summer.

Wako Metal Industry's hot-dip zinc aluminum alloy plating "Wako AZ Galva Leo

Wako AZ Galva Leo (photo), a highly corrosion-resistant hot-dip zinc-aluminum alloy coating produced by Wako Metal Industry Co. in Suminoe Ward, Osaka City, is expanding its lineup. Because it boasts 10 times higher corrosion resistance than hot-dip galvanizing, it has been used mostly for measures against salt damage, but it has begun to be used for ordinary infrastructure applications such as bridges and overhead wires. The process contains 5% aluminum and 1% magnesium, and the company uses it for plating small items such as bolts and washers. The company says it is receiving an increasing number of inquiries from customers who want to extend the service life of their products, since rust from these fastening materials can easily damage them.
