On the evening of May 18, 2024, residents in Jinan, Shandong, China, captured moments of localized rain clouds, which appeared like a delicate veil connecting the sky and the earth, as the sudden hail hit the city. The video shows the raindrops showering from the dense clouds accompanied by terrifying lightning. Zheng Lina, the chief forecaster at the Jinan Meteorological Observatory, explained in a local interview that this meteorological marvel is called a "virga", which occurs when raindrops evaporate continuously as they fall, creating streak-like suspensions. The virga is often observed during high temperatures in summer, which leads to localized convective weather conditions.
