TOKYO, Japan - Former Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki (file photo taken in 1986) died of pneumonia July 19 at a Tokyo hospital. He was 93. Suzuki became premier in July 1980, succeeding Masayoshi Ohira.

TOKYO, Japan - Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Shunichi Suzuki, newly appointed environment minister, enters the prime minister's office in Tokyo on Sept. 30. Suzuki, 49, son of former Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki, has replaced Hiroshi Oki, 75.

Zenko Suzuki Born on Jan. 11, 1911 in Iwate Prefecture. After graduating from the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry's Fisheries Institute (now Tokyo University of Fisheries) in 1935, Suzuki worked for various fisheries organizations. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1947. Suzuki became Japan's 70th prime minister on July 17, 1980 following the sudden death of then Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira. He served as premier until Nov. 27, 1982. Photo was taken in February, 1986.

Prime Minister Visits Northern Territories

This is the first visit by Prime Minister Suzuki Zenko as an incumbent. The territorial issue remains in a severe state.   The Sea of Okhotsk, Prime Minister Suzuki Zenko on his inspection tour, being welcomed by local residents, Prime Minister Suzuki Zenko and others involved in the campaign for the return of the Northern Territories, Russian and Japanese patrol vessels in the straits, discussions between the government and local fishermen, kelp fishing, and an actor presenting his own song at a lecture by the Liberal Democratic Party, wishing for the return of the Northern Territories.
