Starting today, July 5, Parisians and visitors alike will be able to take a dip in the Seine in specific areas and for the first time legally after over 100 years. The move marks the fulfillment of a bold promise made back in 1988 by Paris Mayor Jacques Chirac. Swimming in the iconic river had been banned since 1923 due to health and safety concerns, but after decades of cleanup efforts and environmental reforms, the Seine is reopening for public bathing through August 31.
