TACHIKAWA, Japan - One of plaintiffs holds a banner telling their supporters of their victory after the Hachioji branch of the Tokyo District Court ordered the government May 13 to pay around 160 million yen in compensation to 242 out of the 325 people who sued the government over aircraft noise at the U.S. forces' Yokota air base in western Tokyo. But the court rejected the plaintiffs' other demands for a ban on night flights and for damages from future aircraft noise.

TACHIKAWA, Japan - A bronze replica of a statue depicting the legendary twin founders of Rome being nursed by a female wolf is unveiled to the public in a ceremony in Chofu, western Tokyo, on Nov. 13, 2001. The ceremony at Tokyo Stadium was held to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the signing of a friendship agreement between Rome and Tokyo. Italian Ambassador to Japan Gabriele Menegatti and Chofu Mayor Katsuyuki Yoshio attended the ceremony.

Japanese to complete 22,000-km Arctic trek in 2002

TACHIKAWA, Japan - A 57-year-old adventurer from Tokyo said he hopes to complete his 22,000-kilometer trek by dog sled across the Arctic from central Siberia to eastern Greenland in July 2002, more than five years since he set out on the journey and traveling nearly double the current long-distance record. Kazuo Kojima said he embarked on the trip because he wanted to follow the route supposedly taken by ancestors of the Inuits to reach the North American continent some 20,000 years ago. This photo was taken in May 2001, when Kojima and his Canadian teammate reached northern Canada after traveling some 2,500 km.

TACHIKAWA, Japan - Some 2,300 amateur runners take part in the first foot race held on the 3,350-meter runway at the U.S. Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo Aug. 1 during an annual Japan-U.S. friendship festival. The base has caught public attention since Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara vowed to seek its return or joint use by the U.S. military and civilian airlines.
