TAIKI, Japan - An experimental rocket that uses liquid oxygen and polyethylene as composite propellant lifts off from Taichi, Hokkaido, on Dec. 23. The 2.8-meter rocket soared to an altitude of about 1,000 meters in 10 seconds. Developers say the rocket, developed by Harunori Nagata, professor of space engineering at Hokkaido University, takes just about one-10th of the launch cost for a conventional solid-fuel rocket.

The plant former head Osamu Kubota is one of the nine company officials sent to prosecutors on March 16 on suspicion of professional negligence in the massive outbreak of food poisoning that hit western Japan last summer. Others include former Snow Brand President Tetsuro Ishikawa and former Senior Managing Director Hiroshi Soma. The powdered skim milk produced in Taiki was an ingredient in tainted dairy products such as low-fat milk and yogurt drinks made at Snow Brand's Osaka plant that led to widespread food poisoning in June and July last year.
