OFFICIALLY INAUGURATED IN 1956, THIS 70 HECTARE NECROPOLIS IS LOCATED ON THE HEIGHTS OVERLOOKING OMAHA BEACH. IT WAS DESIGNED BY HARBESON, HOUGH, LIVINGSTON & LARSON AND THE SPACE WAS ARRANGED BY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT MARKLEY STEVENSON WHO ENSURED THAT, FROM ANY ANGLE, A ROW OF CROSSES COULD BE SEEN. AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CEMETERY, A BRONZE STATUE 7 METERS HIGH, INSIDE THE SEMI-CIRCLE FORMED BY THE COLONNADE OF THE MEMORIAL, FACES THE SQUARES OF THE TOMBS. IT SYMBOLIZES THE SPIRIT OF AMERICAN YOUTH RISING FROM THE WAVES. THIS STATUE IS SURROUNDED BY PEBBLES SYMBOLIZING THE DIFFICULTY OF TANKS CROSSING THE BEACH. THE WHITE MARBLE STELES ARE IN THE SHAPE OF A LATIN CROSS OR IN THE SHAPE OF THE STAR OF DAVID FOR SOLDIERS OF THE JEWISH FAITH. THE BODIES OF 9,388 PEOPLE ARE BURIED IN THE CEMETERY, INCLUDING 307 UNKNOWN PEOPLE AND FOUR WOMEN. THESE PEOPLE MAINLY DIED ON THE DAY OF THE LANDING OR IN THE FOLLOWING
