The traditional air show "Tora! Tora! Tora!" simulated the scene of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in World War II and was designed to commemorate all soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. This air show has a history of 51 years and is one of the oldest civilian air show performances in the United States, according to the organizers. In addition to live air shows, the airshow also displayed many military and civilian aircraft on the tarmac. 'Giant' robotic statue on display at Osaka city hall

OSAKA, Japan - A visitor admires a 7.2-meter robotic statue put on display at the entrance lobby of the Osaka city hall as part of a 52-day ''Aqua Metropolis Osaka 2009'' event starting Aug. 22 in the western Japan city. Produced by 43-year-old artist Kenji Yanobe and named ''Giant Tora-yan,'' the baby-faced statue, whose body shape resembles a person wearing a radiation protection suit, is equipped with a gadget that enables it to spew fire as its ''ultimate weapon,'' though using it in the sprinkler-installed city hall is forbidden.

Tora-fugu now can be raised in a tank of fresh water

OKAYAMA, Japan - The Japanese delicacy tora-fugu is a species of puffer fish that lives in sea water. Now, a research team at Okayama University of Science Professional Training College in Okayama Prefecture has succeeded breeding them in fresh water. The trick, the researchers there say, is to add a small amount of electrolytes into the water. The taste of fresh water-raised tora-fugu, the students involved in the project say, is ''really tasty.''

TOKYO, Japan - Veteran actor Tatsuya Mihashi (file photo) died of a heart attack on May 16 at a Tokyo hospital. He was 80. Mihashi took part in numerous films and television dramas, and was known particularly for his role as Cmdr. Minoru Genda in the 1970 U.S.-Japanese movie ''Tora! Tora! Tora!'' that depicted the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 as told from both the American and Japanese sides.
