Sanzen'in unveils treasured Buddha statue

KYOTO, Japan - Yakushi, a statute of the Buddha of healing kept at Sanzen'in temple in Kyodo, is opened to the public for the first time in 1,200 years on Sept. 8. The wooden statute, which stands about 1.2 meters high, was craved by Saicho (767-822), the founder of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, during the Enryaku era (782-806). Sanzen'in said it opened the statue to the public in commemoration of the 1,200th anniversary of its foundation.

Rokkaku-do

Rokkakudo Temple is seen looking northwest from the southeastern side of the temple grounds. The official name is Shiunzan Chohoji. It is an independent temple of the Tendai Sect. The common name Rokkakudo (Hexagonal Hall) comes from the hexagonal shape of the main hall. The main hall shown here was built in 1872. The Sanmon Gate at Sensoji Temple

The sanmon (front gate) at Sensoji Temple was called Niomon because statues of the guardian deities Kongo Rikishi were installed on both the right and left (present-day Hozomon). Statues of Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri Bodhisattva) and Shiten (four angels) are installed on the second floor of the gate building. Daibutsu (the Great Buddha),Hyogo

The Great Buddha of Nofukuji Temple (present-day Hyogo Ward) taken in the latter half of the Meiji Period. This is an important Tendai Sect temple and is a place remembered in connection with Taira Kiyomori, who traded with Sung Dynasty China in the latter part of the Heian Period. After the opening of the port of Kobe, Christianity gained popularity. This statue of Vairocana Buddha was unveiled on March 15, 1891 as part of an effort to revive Buddhism.
