KARATSU, Japan - Local people carry one of 14 huge floats during the traditional Karatsu-Kunchi festival of the Karatsu Shrine in Saga Prefecture on Nov. 3. The three-day festival ends Nov. 4.

Sapporo kicks off snow festival

Tourists pose in front of snow sculptures as the Sapporo Snow Festival, the 50th in annual series, opens Friday Feb. 5. A total of 330 large and small sculptures are on display at three separate sites in the Hokkaido capital. Organizers expect over 2 million spectators to attend the event scheduled to run through Feb. 11.
