US: Time-Lapse Shows Heavy Snow Blanketing Ohio State University’s South Oval

Time-lapse footage shows snow accumulating over a 24-hour period on Sunday, January 25, at the South Oval on the Ohio State University campus. A major winter storm swept across the U.S., bringing widespread heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain. The storm has caused seven deaths and massive power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of people.

High levels of radiation detected on Taiwan island

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Katsumi Nakao (R), an anthropology professor at J.F. Oberlin University in Tokyo, and Yo Kato, an associate professor at the School of Radiology of Tokyo Metropolitan University, attend a press conference in Taipei, Taiwan, on Nov. 20, 2012, to announce that they had detected high levels of radiation on Orchid Island earlier in November. Olympic judo champion Uchishiba arrested

TOKYO, Japan - A vehicle carrying Masato Uchishiba, a two-time Olympic judo champion, leaves the Metropolitan Police Department in Tokyo on Dec. 6, 2011, following his arrest earlier in the day on suspicion of raping a female member of the judo team of the university where he had served as a coach. Uchishiba, 33, allegedly raped the teenager at a Tokyo hotel in late September after drinking alcohol with her, police said.

1996 murder of Sophia University student remembered

TOKYO, Japan - The parents of Junko Kobayashi, a 21-year-old Sophia University student who was bound and stabbed to death inside their house in Tokyo in 1996, offer flowers at the site where she was killed and the house burned on Sept. 9 on the 12th anniversary of her murder. Tetso Tachinobe, chief of the Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigation Division, attended the memorial and vowed to resolve the murder-arson case. Police distributed flyers in the neighborhood on Sept. 9 to appeal for information on the case. No suspect has been found so far.

Ex-education ministry official arrested over alleged bribe-taking

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo Metropolitan Police agents show up at the education ministry on April 4 to search for incriminating evidence after Hiroshi Oshima, 59, former chief of the ministry's Facilities Planning and Administration Department, was arrested on suspicion of receiving bribes from a construction firm in return for favorable consideration on a facility improvement project for a national university.

University of Tokyo Hospital inspected

TOKYO, Japan - Officials from the health ministry and the Tokyo metropolitan government walk into the University of Tokyo Hospital in Bunkyo Ward on Feb. 21 for investigation following the death there of a male patient in his 50s. Inspectors are focusing on the hospital's response to the incident and whether or not training is being given to prevent recurrences of such incidents.

2 univ. profs nabbed over exam questions leaks

FUKUSHIMA, Japan - Kenji Kusunoki, a 54-year-old former professor of the private Ohu University in Fukushima Prefecture, leaves his home in the prefectural capital at 6:30 a.m. Jan. 6 before being arrested later in the day on charges of leaking and helping to leak questions on last year's National Dentistry Examination to his students. Itsuo Ueda, a 59-year-old Health Sciences University of Hokkaido professor who served on the national exam board and is suspected of providing the questions to Kusunoki, was also arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police the same day.
