Last month, the country's supreme court issued a ruling that ended a government policy exempting ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, men from military conscription. Mandatory military service has been a large part of Israeli life, but there has been a longstanding exception for Haredi men, who instead continue full-time Torah study.
