The torii,Taiyuin Shrine,Nikko

This is the stone torii gate dedicated by Kuroda Nagamasa at the front gate (Niomon) to Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. It is nine meters tall, and the pillars are 1.2 metres in diameter. This is the largest granite torii gate in Japan. Ueno Toshogu Shrine

When the local God is seen to be the incarnation of a God, it is called Gongen . Tokugawa Ieyasu was a human being but was called Gongen, the Tosho Daigongen. The building worshipping Ieyasu was the Toshogu, and apart form the Toshogu in Ueno, there are others in Nikko of Tochigi prefecture and Mt. The five-story pagoda,Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

A five-story pagoda stands behind the highest stone torii at the front of the Toshogu approach. This mixture of Buddhist and Shinto styles was seen frequently in Toshogu. The stone torii has a plague inscribed with the words Tosho Daigongen written by the Emperor Omizuo.
