KISARAZU, Japan - Two Buddhist priests recite a sutra during the first memorial service held in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture, on Aug. 8 for 12 American airmen who died when their B-29 bomber was shot down by Japanese artillery fire during World War II. About 150 Japanese and American nationals attended the service, among them Col. Edward McAllister of the U.S. air force, an attache at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

OKAYAMA, Japan - Two Japan Coast Guard ships search for debris near the 1,573-ton Honduras-registered freighter Rose-River which collided with a small Japanese cargo ship in the Seto Inland Sea on June 5. The collision left two Japanese crewmen of the cargo ship dead.

TOKYO, Japan - Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) members on Feb. 14 search a bamboo grove in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, where an OH-6 observation helicopter from the GSDF's Camp Kisarazu crashed after it hit an AH-1 antitank chopper from the same camp. Two crewmen on board the OH-6 were killed. A window on the AH-1 broke and one crewman suffered slight injuries, but the chopper returned to camp.
