The Kiyomizu Temple in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto city, head temple of the Hokuhoso Sect. It is a fudasho (an office where amulets are distributed to pilgrims) among the 33 spiritual places of western Japan. The main building is located at the middle of Mt. Otowa built on an overhanging cliff (Kengaizukuri), with pillars 9 ken (about 16.3 m) in length and beams 7 ken (about 12.7 m) in length. The main part is divided into outer and inner chambers, and the outer front part has two chapels of worship and a canopy. The verandah protrudes to the left and right. The front of the canopy is famous as the Kiyomizu no Butai (the stage of Kiyomizu). 500,000-year-old human habitat site made public

CHICHIBU, Japan - The site which is believed to be a human habitat dating back 500,000 years in Chichibu , Saitama Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, is made public on Feb. 26 with more than 3,000 visitors. The remains, including several pits into which the pillars for two buildings were likely placed, are the oldest evidence of man-made structures discovered in Japan.
