E. Timor polls could be held Aug. 30 next year: De Mello

DILI, East Timor - Sergio Vieira de Mello, who heads the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), in an interview with a small group of reporters, says in Dili on Aug. 19 that the first democratic election in East Timor could be held as early as Aug. 30 next year. East Timor is under UNTAET control as it moves toward full independence. Aug. 30 is the date of last year's historic U.N.-administered referendum in which East Timorese voted for independence from Indonesia.

ASEAN will not discuss E. Timor membership: Surin

U.N. No. 2 official in E. Timor arrives in Dili

DILI, East Timor - Veteran Japanese government aid official Akira Takahashi arrives in Dili on Dec. 9 to serve as a deputy chief of the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). Before taking up the post, he served for 35 years with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Daily necessities begin arriving at market

DILI, East Timor - Daily necessities have begun arriving at a market in East Timor's capital of Dili after two months of operations by the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) to help rebuild the devastated country. East Timorese are now seeking help from the international community to reconstruct their lives.

More than 10,000 East Timorese apply for UNTAET jobs+

DILI, East Timor - More than 10,000 East Timorese gather in front of the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) on Jan. 15 to apply for jobs offered by the U.N. office. UNTAET plans to employ 15,000 local staff, including 2,500 police officers.
