TOKYO, Japan - Cartoonist Kazuo Umezu poses for photographers after the Tokyo District Court dismissed demands by two of his neighbors for him to remove the red-and-white stripes from his house in Tokyo's Musashino city. The court said that the house ''attracts attention, but cannot be said to destroy the scenery.'' Umezu, who attended court wearing a red-and-white striped tie, told reporters after the ruling, ''I would like to live showing respect to others.''

The plaintiffs had claimed that the house, completed in March last year and decorated with horizontal red-and-white stripes each about 50 centimeters wide, destroys the scenery.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Ryoshichi Umezu, the 78-year-old father of a murder victim, Chika Matsumoto, expressed dissatisfaction in Fukuoka Prefecture on Jan. 24 after a Chinese court earlier in the day sentenced a Chinese man to death but spared the life of another after finding them guilty of the 2003 murders of a family of four in the Japanese prefecture. The two Chinese, formerly students in Japan, were sentenced for killing Chika, her husband and clothing dealer Shinjiro, their son Kai and daughter Hina. The second man was given a life term.
