TOKYO, Japan - Erika Sakai, the 16-year-old 2006 Unitika Ltd. mascot girl, wears clothes using a corn-based environmentally friendly fabric during a fashion show in Tokyo on Oct. 16. The textile maker said the fabric can be decomposed by bacteria into water and into carbon dioxide if buried in soil.

Unitika, YKK jointly devise biodegradable velcro strap

TOKYO, Japan - Textile manufacturer Unitika Ltd. and fastener producer YKK Corp. said Dec. 4 they have developed a velcro strap (photo) that dissolves in the ground. The biodegradable velcro strap is the first ever developed and will be put on the market in January, the two companies said.
