Former vice premier, No. 2 SDP lawmaker Kubo dies at 74

TOKYO, Japan - Wataru Kubo (file photo), a former Social Democratic Party (SDP) secretary general who served as vice premier-cum-finance minister in 1996, died on June 24 at a Kagoshima hospital. He was 74. A former House of Councillors lawmaker, Kubo was secretary general and deputy leader of the longtime opposition party when the party joined in forming a coalition government supporting then-Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa in 1993.
