Rare Solar Storm Triggers Northern Lights Across Europe and North America

A powerful geomagnetic storm triggered by one of the strongest solar eruptions in more than 20 years lit up skies across large parts of Europe and North America on Monday night, January 19. The rare event allowed the northern lights to be seen far south of their usual range, including in parts of the United States, the UK, Germany, and Switzerland, according to NOAA.

A brush fire broke out in Santa Barbara County, California, along northbound Highway 101 near Mariposa Reina on Tuesday, June 17. The flames prompted the closure of southbound lanes of the highway. The fire burned an estimated 30 acres.

The Eaton Fire, raging in the Angeles National Forest near Altadena and Pasadena, erupted on Tuesday night, January 7, and burned over 10,600 acres by the next day. The fast-moving blaze has claimed five lives, destroyed hundreds of structures, and prompted evacuations for more than 32,500 residents in the area.

A fast-moving brush fire dubbed the Airport fire, broke out in Trabuco Canyon in Orange County, Southern California. The blaze grew to burn about 2,000 acres on Monday, September 9, prompting evacuation orders for nearby areas.
