Shehuo Parade - China

Shehuo Parade - China

Performers rehearse a Shehuo parade in Longxian County of Baoji City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, February 10, 2025. Longxian County, referred to as Long Zhou in the old days, is well-known for the local Shehuo parade featuring authentic and inclusive performance and simple yet exquisite facial make-up. The Shehuo parade, a time-honored performance enjoying widespread popularity in rural areas across China, originated from ancient sacrificial activities to pray for a good harvest about 2,000 years ago. Later on, as dancing and singing performances were absorbed into the parade, it gradually evolved into a folk custom staged during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, believed to remove bad luck and bring a fresh start in the new year. The Shehuo folk performance in Baoji made it onto the list of China's national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. And the local Shehuo performance in Longxian County has continued to glow with vitality in inheritance and innovation in recent years. Photo by Xinhu

Pharmaceutical company in Rong'an County

Technicians test sweet wormwood as raw materials at a pharmaceutical company in Rong'an County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on August 27, 2024. Located in a remote, mountainous area experiencing severe rocky desertification, Rong'an County covers largely barren land that makes traditional farming difficult. However, its harsh conditions are ideal for growing sweet wormwood, which thrives in arid environments and can withstand drought. Once dried, the plant is processed to extract artemisinin, which is then made into medicine and shipped to Africa to help local communities fight malaria. Rong'an is a major production base of artemisinin at home and abroad. The annual production of artemisinin exceeds 100 tonnes, accounting for a quarter of the global total. In recent years, companies, planting bases, scientific research institutes, cooperatives and local farmers in Rong'an have been coordinated to develop sweet wormwood planting to advance rural revitalization. Pregnant Tibetan Antelope Rescue - China

In this video screenshot, a wolf approaches an injured Tibetan antelope in Qiangtang National Nature Reserve in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, June 14, 2024. Not far from a wildlife protection camp deep in the Qiangtang National Nature Reserve, a wolf on Friday attacked a pregnant Tibetan antelope among a migrating herd, leaving wounds in her stomach and neck. At the sight of the antelope struggling in the snow, several rangers carried her back to the camp for rescue. Unfortunately, her belly was slashed open and internal organs were damaged beyond cure. The rangers had no other choice but to sew up her belly and send her back to the wild, where she was found dead the next morning. Every year, tens of thousands of pregnant Tibetan antelopes, a species under first-class state protection in China, start their migration around May for birth-giving and would return with their cubs in late July. Their natural enemies including wolves and bears are always there to ambush them. Photo by Dawa Dorje/Xinhu

The Zuojiang Huashan site is home to more than 1,900 well-preserved drawings on the face of the Huashan mountains along the Zuojiang River and its tributary Mingjiang River in Chongzuo. The brownish red paintings, created from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) to East Han Dynasty (25-220), depict the sacrifices of the Luoyue people, ancestors of today's Zhuang ethnic minority. It is said that the major images of the paintings are frog-shaped people -- a totem of the Zhuang ethnic group. Some of those paintings also show sports scenes. It remains a mystery how the Luoyue managed to paint on the rocks. The group of rock paintings was included into UNESCO's world heritage list in 2016. (Xinhu
