Tourists head to Nikko to see autumn leaves on Iroha-zaka

Tourists' cars drive through Iroha-zaka, a famous winding road in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, on Oct. 22, 2015 as trees on the mountains around the area display their autumn colors of red and yellow. Since the best time to view the leaves is said to last for only one week, a large number of tourists are expected in the upcoming days to drive up the road. Photo was taken from a Kyodo News helicopter. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo

Bamboo grooves near Kiyomizudera Temple

Stereograph depicting rickshaws on the Gojo-zaka slope surrounded by bamboo groves. The two women, one with a parasol, are passengers on the rickshaw pulled by the man with an amigasa hat. Bamboo fencing made of bamboo grass tied to bamboo poles prevents the bamboo from encroaching upon the path. Taken prior to 1909, when the slope was expanded to a width of 7.2 meters. Taken by Herbert G. Ponting in 1904.==Date:1904, Place:Kyoto, Photo:Underwood, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number97‐1‐0]

A man pulling a rickshaw and a woman with goods to be sold, carried in baskets suspended from a yoke, stand at Gojo-zaka slope which is surrounded by bamboo brush. Bamboo grass grows thickly on both sides of the road. The broken bamboo on both sides in the foreground was probably cut to prevent the bamboo grass from spreading to the road. The path is narrow and rickshaws can barely pass each other. The hundred-step Otokozaka slope at Mt. Atago

The stone stairs leading to Atago Shinto Shrine at the top of Mt. Atago. The steps in the centre, Otoko-zaka (Man Slope), are mentioned in old stories and songs as the place where Magaki Heikuro ascended and descended on horseback. The inclination of about 40 degrees seems too steep for a horse. The gently-sloping staircase on the right is Onna-zaka (Woman Slope). There was a third slope called Shin-zaka (New Slope) at the other side of the mountain. One of the photographs in the album sold by Baron Raimund von Stillfried Rathenitz, this may have been taken by Felix Beato in the early years of the Meiji Period.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:R. A view of the Goji-in plain outside Ichihashi-mon Gate

View of Shimizu-mon (gate) located half-way up Kudan-zaka (in front of Tayasu Gate). The gate visible in the centre back is Shimizu-mon. Since the gate was destroyed in 1873, this photograph must have been taken before that date. The building on its right is the guardsmen's artillery station at Takebashi. The moat in the foreground was called Ushigafuchi (Bull Ravine). The Shinsen Tokyo Meishozue (Newly Selected Famous Places of Tokyo) states that, A bull and cart carrying coins went down into the moat and never came up, and this is the origin of the name. When attached to photograph #4003, this becomes a continuous panoramic scene.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:R.
