Japanese beef promoted in U.S. for 1st time in 6 years

LOS ANGELES, United States - A tasting event to promote Japanese beef is held in Los Angeles following decisions by Japan and the United States in December to resume imports of each other's beef products. Japan's National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (Zen-Noh) organized the event to mark the first shipment of Japanese beef to the U.S. market since an import ban was imposed in March 2000 after an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Japan.

Shipment of square watermelons begins in Kagawa

TAKAMATSU, Japan - Workers at an agricultural cooperative in Kagawa Prefecture make preparations June 12 for the shipment of square watermelons that look like huge dice. The Zentsuji branch of the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (Zen-Noh) will ship about 700 cubic watermelons, grown in 19 x 19 centimeter glass boxes, to the domestic market as well as to Hong Kong and Canada, among other places. The specialty of the Zentsuji cooperative fetches around 10,000 yen each wholesale and is only for exhibition.

Snow Brand's planned firm to use new brand name 'MEGMILK'

TOKYO, Japan - Shinichi Sugitani (C), who will assume the presidency of Nippon MilkCommunity Co. to be launched Jan. 1, and other officials show the company's new brand called ''MEGMILK'' at a news conference in Tokyo on Aug. 22. The new company will be formed by integrating milk divisions of the scandal-hit Snow Brand Milk Products Co., the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (Zen-Noh) and the National Federation of Dairy Cooperative Associations (Zenrakuren).
