Japan Tobacco to undertake drastic restructuring

TOKYO, Japan - Japan Tobacco Co. Vice President Akira Saeki speaks at a news conference in Tokyo on Oct. 30, 2013, as the company said it will close four of its nine cigarette manufacturing-related factories in Japan and a vending machine production base, most of them in March 2015, and cut 1,600 jobs, or about 20 percent of the employees in its tobacco business, due to falling sales.

Yakuza nabbed for stealing Peko-chan doll

WAKAYAMA, Japan - Peko-chan mascot dolls, which were retrieved from recycle shops in the city of Osaka, are stored at a police station in the city of Wakayama. Police said on Sept. 2 they have arrested Hiroshi Inaba, an executive of a crime syndicate, for allegedly stealing a Peko-chan mascot doll from a store of confectionery maker Fujiya Co. in Wakayama. The dolls are thought to trade for around 150,000 yen (about $1,600) to 200,000 yen among collectors.

ABDAREH, Iran - Rescue workers search for survivors trapped in rubble in the village of Abdareh, Qazvin Province, northwestern Iran, on June 22 after an earthquake measuring a magnitude of 6.3 devastated the village. More than 500 people were killed and about 1,600 others injured in the strong quake.

About 3,000 of social dance fans across Japan hold an eight-hour mass dance party July 3 at Odate Jukai Dome in Odate, Akita Prefecture. The photo shows the participants in formal and informal dresses dancing waltz and rumba in the cavernous hall, which has 1,600 square meters in floor space under a 52-meter-high roof made of cedar wood.
