OSAKA, Japan - A local group cooks a gigantic Japanese pancake Nov. 3 in Osaka city, attempting to set a new record for the largest ''okonomiyaki'' in the Guinness Book of Records. The pancake was about 8 meters wide and 3 centimeters thick, weighing about 1.6 tons. It was large enough to serve 5,000 people, the group said. The okonomiyaki pancake was made with 400 cabbages, about 4,300 eggs and nearly 90 kilograms of pork.

OSAKA, Japan - A model shows off cat robots, made by Omron Corp., that will go on the market from Nov. 20. The robots, called ''Necoro,'' can stretch their backs, lie down and purr. They are the same size as real cats and each weigh 1.6 kilograms. The robots contain various sensors which among other things allow them to memorize the frequency of human voices, so that they will face their owners when the owners call out the pet robots' names. Omron plans to sell 5,000 Necoro robots for about 185,000 yen each.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Fukuoka police display May 28 a large amount of stimulants and cannabis smuggled from Germany. Yutaka Handa, a 45-year-old unemployed man from Fukuoka Prefecture, is suspected of mailing about 5,000 ecstasy pills and roughly 880 grams of cannabis from Germany on April 2 to his home in Kurume.

ITOMAN, Japan - A ceremony is held in Itoman, Okinawa Prefecture, on June 23, to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the end of fierce fighting in Okinawa between U.S. and Japanese forces toward the end of World War II. The memorial service, which began at noon at the Peace Memorial Park in the city, was attended by about 5,000 people, including Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, Okinawa Gov. Keiichi Inamine, and the relatives of more than 200,000 people, mostly civilians, who were killed in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.
