JVC devises technology to make thinner rear-projection TVs

TOKYO, Japan - Victor Co. of Japan Ltd. (JVC) said on Sept. 28 it has developed a technology that can substantially reduce the depth of rear-projection television sets. In the case of a 60-inch machine (in photo), the depth can be cut to 27 centimeters, about 40 percent thinner than the company's existing model, the company said.

OSAKA, Japan - Sharp Corp. said July 29 it will sell light-producing solar panels with embedded light emitting diodes starting Nov. 1. The Lumiwall produces light throughout the day by using sunlight and by using LEDs at night if it is used on building windows or greenhouses. The panel, about 60 centimeters wide and 1 meter long, has a maximum power output of 35 watts, Sharp said.

60,000 homes in west Japan city face water outage after pipe collapse

WAKAYAMA, Japan, Oct. 4 Kyodo - Around 60,000 homes in a western Japan city have been facing a water outage since a section of a water pipe bridge collapsed, city officials said Monday.Some 138,000 people in parts of the city of Wakayama have been affected. The bridge that spans the Kinokawa River is not used for crossing banks by people or cars. In the incident, confirmed on Sunday evening, the two pipes on the bridge collapsed for about 60 meters near the center of the river. The bridge is 546 meters long, with each pipe measuring around 90 centimeters in diameter.
