One of the machines named Shengli is 282-meter-long and weighs about 2,900 tonnes. It has an excavation diameter of more than 8 meters. The machine can drill 15 to 20 meters into the rock on average per day, about five times faster than traditional drilling and blasting. The Tianshan Shengli tunnel is one of the world's longest expressway tunnels under construction. Stretching for 22 km, the tunnel is a crucial part of the 1,300-km expressway linking Urumqi, capital of China's Xinjiang, with Yuli County, 50-km south of the city of Korla in central Xinjiang. Sumitomo Seimitsu Industries, Ltd. and Collins Aerospace Corporation of the U.S. will increase the production capacity of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors by up to five times the current level by 2024. In addition to conventional products such as inertial sensors for aerospace applications, contract production of various sensors required for automation of factories and machines will grow significantly. Silicon Sensing Systems (SSSL, Plymouth), an English subsidiary established by the two companies in 1999 with a 50% stake each, has its sole production base at the headquarters of Sumitomo Precision Products. As the first phase of the expansion, the plant will be moved to another building by August 2008, and expanded to 3,000 square meters, about twice the current size. In addition to a clean room, etching and sputtering equipment will be added, doubling the production capacity. NTT Comware's New Agile Development Center

On October 7, NTT Comware opened a new base in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, where it can smoothly implement agile development, which is the process of creating IT systems by repeating partial trials over and over again. The new base, "Comware to Agile," will increase the number of agile human resources to 1,500, five times the current number, by 2021. The new base, "Comware to Space," has a total floor space of about 300 square meters. In order to facilitate system development using Scrum, an agile development method that emphasizes how to work as a team, seven spaces have been set up where development teams consisting of six to eight people can work at a single desk until the project is completed. TOKYO, Japan - Handout photo shows a pack of new nickel zinc primary batteries Toshiba Battery Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Toshiba Corp., has developed.
