The shrine at the top of Mt. Atago

This seems to have been copied from the June 12, 1871 issue of The Far East, then tinted and sold as a photograph. The Far East, which later became a monthly illustrated magazine, was an English-language newspaper with photographs printed on albumen paper and glued to the pages. Each photograph was printed using natural light and so a variety of negatives was used. This photograph depicts seven children. A geigi wearing a kimono sits on the veranda of a house. She has both hands in her lap. Her hair is styled in shimada fashion, and she seems to have white shironuri makeup on her face. There is a chest in the room behind her, and a lamp has been placed next to her.
