Lake Ashi

This photo captures Lake Ashinoko, Dogashima, and Mt. Fuji viewed from Tomi-bansho (lookout station) of Hakone barrier station. If the Imperial Villa on the peninsula projecting in the lake on the right side of the photo can be seen, it was taken after 1886. However, it is outside of the photo, and therefore, cannot be verified. The triangular mountain before Mt. Fuji is Mt. Oura River and the foreign settlement

Looking upstream the Oura River. This photo was taken between 1864 and 1866. The two-storied western building on the right was owned by a Dutchman called J. Bruinier, the house next door was Smith Ship Chandler. The western-style building further down the street has a sign saying ‘Express’. On the left side of the river bank are, starting from the foreground, Oura No. 14 (leased out by Alt) and No. 15 (leased out by Glover). The building with the white walls is No. 29.
