''I don't have any desire to serve for any extended period,'' Foley told reporters at his official residence in Tokyo. The 71-year-old former U.S. House of Representatives speaker was dispatched to Japan in November 1997 to assume the ambassadorship as a successor to former Vice President Walter Mondale.
