SAMAWAH, Iraq - A local Iraqi human rights activist and Japanese civic group members have detected radiation levels 300 times higher than normal around the remains of an antiaircraft gun abandoned by the former Iraqi army 2 kilometers from the center of the southern city of Samawah, the activist said Jan. 10. Japan's noncombat ground troops will be dispatched to the city to prepare for the deployment of core units to help Iraq's reconstruction.

YOKOSUKA, Japan - What appear to be missiles are loaded on the U.S. guided missile destroyer Curtis Wilbur at the U.S. Navy's Yokosuka base in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo on Sept. 14. The loading was conducted amid watchful security and done by crane from an anchoring site at the base that stores supplies such as ammunition and fuel. The Curtis Wilbur is capable of carrying 90 antiaircraft, air-launched cruise and antisubmarine missiles.
