Missiles appear to be loaded on U.S. warship at Yokosuka base

YOKOSUKA, Japan - What appear to be missiles are loaded on the U.S. guided missile destroyer Curtis Wilbur at the U.S. Navy's Yokosuka base in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo on Sept. 14. The loading was conducted amid watchful security and done by crane from an anchoring site at the base that stores supplies such as ammunition and fuel. The Curtis Wilbur is capable of carrying 90 antiaircraft, air-launched cruise and antisubmarine missiles.

NAGOYA, Japan - Parked at a factory of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. in Toyoyama, Aichi Prefecture, on Aug. 8 is a prototype of a new antisubmarine patrol helicopter, the SH60JKai, an advanced version of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force SH60J chopper, which will be decommissioned from fiscal 2004.

HONOLULU, United States - A Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) warship practices firing antiaircraft missiles June 5 in RIMPAC 2000, a series of joint military drills involving seven countries in waters off Hawaii. The Aegis-type vessel is one of eight warships dispatched by the MSDF, which has also sent about 2,000 sailors, a submarine and eight P-3C antisubmarine aircraft to take part in the monthlong exercises which began May 30.
