Three people lost their lives early Wednesday morning in a fire in a block of flats in the municipality of Rubi near Barcelona.
The Catalan fire brigade confirmed the deaths after they had attended the blaze with 11 fire engines.
They said that five more people suffered smoke inhalation.
The three victims were all residents in the same first-floor apartment of the three-story building. They all died as they were trying to leave the building.
Police are still investigating the cause of the fire. The local radio station (Radio Rubi) reported that neighbors had heard an explosion in the hall of the building and the flames appeared immediately afterwards.

STORY: Spainish police recover 100-year-old drawings by Salvador Dali

The Catalan regional police have recovered two stolen drawings by famous Spanish artist Salvador Dali, which were made 100 years ago and valued at 300,000 euros (320,460 U.S. dollars) each.
The drawings were stolen from an apartment in the wealthy Sarria-Sant Gervasi district of Barcelona, and the police have returned them to the owners, said Jose Luis Gonzalez, head of the Central Investigation and Heritage Area of the Criminal Investigation Division of Catalan police, at a press conference on Friday.
According to the police, three men aged 50, 53 and 55 were arrested on the charge of burglary, while another two were detained for dealing with the swag.
The drawings are "Les sardanes de la festa major" (the Sardana at the celebration) and "Els pagesos"

The family home of a Palestinian man who carried out a car-ramming attack in East Jerusalem that killed three Israelis has been sealed, the Israeli police said Sunday.
A video clip released by the police shows policemen and soldiers welding the doors and windows of an apartment in East Jerusalem.
The home belongs to the parents of the assailant and is occupied by two of his brothers, who were all evacuated along with their belongings prior to the sealing, according to a police statement.
This sealing, the first step toward a possible demolition of the house, came under the order

Three students died in a fire that occurred in an apartment in the city of Huelva, southwestern Spain, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The government of the region of Andalusia has confirmed that the victims were two 21-year-old women and a man of the same age, who were students at the University of Huelva (UHU) and had apparently been celebrating the end of their quarterly exams in the city's Isla Chica neighborhood.
According to witnesses, the fire broke out shortly before 8 a.m. local time and quickly spread through the building. Seven others, who had been in the apartment, were able to escape, but the three victims remained trapped.
Firemen discovered the three unconscious victims, who later died in hospital.
