Nachi Falls lit up

NACHI-KATSUURA, Japan - The Nachi Falls and the three-storied pagoda of Seigantoji Temple located nearby are illuminated on a trial basis Dec. 17 in preparation for the yearend and New Year's Day holidays. The sacred falls of the Kumano Nachi Shrine attracts many ascetics on the New Year's Day.

Lake Chuzenji

The view of Chuguji in Futarasan Shrine on the north shore of Lake Chuzenji. By the shores of the lake are huts for ascetics. An avalanche of earth and rocks destroyed the Kannondo and the two huts to the left of the torii in 1902. Three women and a helmsman can be seen in the boat. Lake Chuzenji

The Nikozan Shrine of Chuguji on the north bank of Chuzenji Lake. Along the lake stands huts of religious ascetics. Due to the 1902 avalanche of rocks and earth, the Kannondo in the centre of the photo and huts to the left of the torii were destroyed.
