PYONGYANG, North Korea - Ri Jo Won (C) from North Phyongan Province in North Korea celebrates astride a grand bull, weighing nearly a ton, given to him in place of a cash award for winning a national ''ssirum,'' or Korean wrestling, tournament, in Pyongyang on Sept. 25, 2009. Ri, 30, came first at the catch-weight event in which 20 grapplers competed.

Dosanko horses ridden to New Year's prayers at Hokkaido shrine

HAKODATE, Japan - Dressed in traditional Japanese warrior costume, riders astride Hokkaido-bred Dosanko horses ascend the Hakodate Hachimangu shrine on Jan. 2 to offer New Year prayers for the safety of man and horse. Reputedly strong in leg, the five Dosanko horses taking part in the annual event climb up the 134 stone steps of the Shinto shrine in less than 1 minute. According to Shigeru Ikeda, owner of the Dosanko Farm horse-riding club in Hakodate, there are about 1,000 Dosanko horses in Hokkaido today, while an estimated 100,000 Dosanko roamed free in Hokkaido in the late 19th century.

T.M. Ocean holds off challengers for Shuka-sho win

KYOTO, Japan - Top favorite T. M. Ocean (R) surges into the lead at the top of the final straight to win the sixth running of the Shuka-sho, the third leg of the triple crown series for 3-year-old fillies, at Kyoto Racecourse on Oct. 14. T.M. Ocean, winner of the Oka-sho in April, completed the 2,000-meter test on turf in 1 minute, 58.5 seconds with jockey Masaru Honda astride to claim the 89 million yen winner's purse.
