June 22 marks the 82nd anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War. Commemorations also took place in other parts of Moscow, as well as in many other cities such as St. Petersburg, Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don. In 1941, German forces launched Operation Barbarossa, sweeping through expansive areas of the Soviet territory almost to the point of taking Moscow.
