Students do the cleaning at Huaping Senior High School for Girls in Huaping County, Lijiang City, southwest China's Yunnan Province, Dec. 25, 2025. Each morning at Huaping High School for Girls in Yunnan Province, the schoolyard rings with a bold pledge, "I was born to be a mountain not a creek, rising to the high peaks with the valleys at my feet." Behind that voice stands Zhang Guimei, the school's founder and principal. In her sixties and struggling with illness, she still devotes more than 18 hours a day to her students. Megaphone in hand, she has become a living symbol of how education can open doors that poverty once closed. Founded in 2008, Huaping High School for Girls is the country's first senior high school to offer free education for girls. The school in mountainous Yunnan Province has created a miracle, with more than 2,000 graduates -- most of whom come from low-income rural families -- admitted to colleges and universities. Many of them later became teachers, doctors and civil servants, fulfill

This photo taken on December 23, 2025 shows the exit of Tianshan Shengli Tunnel on Urumqi-Yuli Expressway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, the world's longest expressway tunnel, and the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway that traverses the Tianshan Mountains via the tunnel, will be open to traffic by the end of this year, enabling a new shortcut linking southern and northern parts of Xinjiang. The 22.13-kilometer tunnel will reduce the time it takes to drive across the middle section of the Tianshan Mountains from several hours to about 20 minutes. Once operational, the travel time from the regional capital of Urumqi, north of the Tianshan Mountains, to Korla, south of the Tianshan Mountains, will be shortened from seven hours to about three hours. China: Trees Seem Lush in Winter, Revealed to Be Covered in Birds

On December 15, 2025, in Xuzhou, eastern China’s Jiangsu province, a video showed several trees that looked unusually lush for winter. From a distance, their branches appeared thick with leaves, even though most nearby trees were bare. As the camera moved closer, the “leaves” were revealed to be small, round birds packed tightly along the branches. They filled almost every twig, giving the trees a dense, full appearance. Occasionally, a few birds shifted or fluttered, but the overall outline remained like a giant canopy. Chinese netizens admired the scene, saying the living “bird trees” reflected the area’s improving environment.
