KYOTO, Japan, Dec. 12 Kyodo - Seihan Mori, chief Buddhist priest of Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto, writes the kanji character "kuma," meaning bear, with a calligraphy brush during the annual kanji-of-the-year event on Dec. 12, 2025. China: Giant Panda Turns Into “White Bear” After Rolling in Snow

On January 21, 2024, in Xi’an, located in northwestern China’s Shaanxi province, a video captured the first snowfall of winter at the Qinling Four Treasures Science Park. Giant panda Qizai played on a slope near a tree. In the footage, Qizai rolled from the higher ground down toward the lower panda house area, turning over several times. Snowflakes stuck to its fur, gradually covering much of its body. By the time it reached the bottom, the panda looked like a round “white bear” with dark patches. The clip highlights the contrast between the thick snow, the enclosure, and the panda’s lively sliding movements.
