JR Hokkaido begins commercially operating Dual-Mode Vehicle

ABASHIRI, Japan - Hokkaido Railway Co. (JR Hokkaido) on April 14 began commercial operations on a test basis of its Dual-Mode Vehicle -- a minibus with retractable train wheels for use on tracks -- on part of the Semmo Line along the Sea of Okhotsk in Japan's northernmost prefecture. The picture shows the DMV as a single-carriage train crossing a bridge in Abashiri.

Five main halls (temples) of Matsushima

It is extremely rare to find rickshaws in a photo with Matsushima Beach in the background, implying that these women must be very upper class. At the time of construction, Godaido Shrine was vermillion, but, only a small part of the shrine building still bears its original color. View of the Mitarashi River at Shimogamo Shinto Shrine. A woman riding a rickshaw and a woman with a parasol are passing each other on a bridge. There are summer pavilions on both sides of the river. The source of Mitarashi River is a spring at Mitarashi Shrine within the Shimogamo Shinto Shrine precincts. In the Meiji Period, bonfires were lit along the river and summer pavilions were built from which to observe them. Women are riding on three jinrikisha (rickshaws). The women are all in kimono. The rickshaw men in the front and middle wear inhanten coats, long underwear and straw sandals, while the rickshaw man in the rear wears a sacerdotal robe, long underwear and straw sandals. The railway in Noge

This photograph, carried in the October 2, 1871 issue of The Far East, depicts the bridge Aoki-bashi at the intersection of the Tokaido Highway and the train tracks. The foliage on the right is part of Honkakuji Temple. The train line to Yokohama follows the embankment made by Takashima Kaemon. Hotarujaya and Ichinose-bashi Bridge

Hotarujaya is viewed from the upstream side. Ichinose Bridge is on the right of the teahouse, and the handrail is visible through the trees. The road on the left is Nagasaki Road leading to Himi Pass. A new road stretching from this point to Yagami on the other side of the mountain was constructed in 1882 by the Himi Shindo Co. led by Matsuda Gengoro and eight others.
