U.S. rover detects carbonates on Mars

WASHINGTON, United States - The U.S. Spirit robotic rover has detected minerals, called carbonates, near its landing spot on Mars, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said Jan. 9. The scientists found the presence of the minerals from data (shown) they received from an infrared instrument called a mini-thermal emission spectrometer. (NASA-Kyodo)
