Cenotaph War Memorial, Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka

The Cenotaph War Memorial built in the 1920s to remember both Ceylonese and Europeans from Ceylon who were killed in the World War I, was constructed at the Galle Face Green. Then it was dismantled and re-erected at Victoria Park (now Viharamahadevi Park), during World War II after fears that the Japanese might use it as a marker to direct their artillery. Japan - Yokohama - The Grand Pier

Japan - Yokohama - The Grand Pier. The HMS Rawalpindi (left) was a British armed merchant cruiser (a converted passenger ship - as it was at the time of this photograph - as the P&O vessel the SS Rawalpindi) that was sunk in a surface action against the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during the first months of Second World War. On the right is the Hikawa Maru - a Japanese ocean liner that was built for the Nippon Yusen KK line by the Yokohama Dock Company. She was launched on 30 September 1929, and made her maiden voyage from Kobe to Seattle on 13 May 1930. Date: circa 1931

Beppu Hot Springs, Japan - the seashore

Beppu, Japan. The city was founded on April 1, 1924, and is famous for its onsen (hot springs), which are regarded as sacred. Beppu is Japan's onsen capital with the largest volume of hot water in the world apart from Yellowstone in the United States and the largest number of hot spring sources in Japan. Beppu contains nine major geothermal hot spots, which are sometimes referred to as the nine hells of Beppu.
