Tokyo Olympic bidding committee boasts compactness

TOKYO, Japan - Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori (4th from R), Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara (3rd from R) and other members of the Tokyo Olympic bidding committee toast to the success of their campaign to host what the committee claims will be the world's most compact Games in recent Olympic history. The committee says the Games will be staged at venues located within a radius of 8 kilometers, even smaller than the initially planned 10 kilometers.

Mercalli, Professor Yoshihiro Kawahara of the University of Tokyo and others have jointly developed "poimo," a personal mobility device for short-distance use. It can be inflated with a commercially available air container and used in the shape of a wooden horse. It can be folded and carried around like a beach ball. With its compactness, softness and safety due to the fact that it is inflated by gas pressure, the company expects the elderly and women with children to use it, and also sees potential for outdoor and leisure use.
