Guadalajara Celebrates The Alto Tajo Crocheters' Festival - Spain

Several people participate in the Alto Tajo Gancheros Festival on August 31, 2024, in Taravilla, Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). The Fiesta Ganchera, or Fiesta de los Gancheros, is a cultural event held the last weekend of August that recalls the ancient activity of the "maderadas", which consisted of transporting and directing along the course of the river the pine trunks felled in the upper reaches of the Tagus to the Madrid town of Aranjuez, where they were used to build the various royal residences in the time of Philip II. The celebration has been declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest and an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, as well as Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.
