The shrine at the top of Mt. Atago

The shrine at the top of Mt. Atago

This seems to have been copied from the June 12, 1871 issue of The Far East, then tinted and sold as a photograph. The Far East, which later became a monthly illustrated magazine, was an English-language newspaper with photographs printed on albumen paper and glued to the pages. Each photograph was printed using natural light and so a variety of negatives was used. This photograph depicts seven children. The building in the back is Atago Shinto Shrine, the deity of which was worshipped for protection from fire.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number90‐26‐0]

Mayasan Toritenjoji Temple. The building in the centre is Bujin-do, which houses a statue of Mayabunin (the mother of Buddha) brought from Tang Dynasty China by the Japanese priest Kobodaishi in the early ninth century. The same photograph was carried in a Kobe guidebook published in 1897, and a lithograph apparently copied from it appeared in another guidebook published in 1893. Thus, it was probably taken in the mid-Meiji Period.==Date:unknown, Place:Kobe, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number71‐17‐0]

A procession of yamakago (mountain palanquins) and kumosuke (palanquin bearers) along the cedar path in Motohakone. This photo has been copied many times and is famous as the work of Kumosuke, but from the number of the negative in the first photo, this is believed to be by Kusakabe Kinbei. The pose suggests that the procession was arranged to make a souvenir photo.==Date:unknown, Place:Hakone, Photo:Ogawa Kazumasa, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number5‐35‐0]
