Spain: Dense Fog Triggers Travel Chaos and Flight Diversions in Madrid and Vigo

Persistent fog and overcast skies across Madrid and Vigo caused significant travel disruptions this Thursday, January 8. Dense morning fog at Peinador Airport forced a Madrid-bound flight to divert much further than its usual alternative in Santiago, ultimately extending the journey for frustrated passengers by more than three hours.

Dense fog over the past several days has continued to disrupt air and rail travel across parts of India, with conditions peaking on Monday, December 29, when Delhi’s IGI Airport saw 128 flight cancellations, dozens of delays, and several diversions as visibility dropped to around 125 meters. Fog has affected airports across north and eastern India and delayed many trains, prompting weather authorities to issue orange alerts for Delhi-NCR and nearby states and warn of continued disruption into the New Year. A major fire broke out in the cargo bay of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Saturday, October 18, while a passenger plane was sitting on the tarmac nearby. The fire, which took 27 hours to extinguish, heavily damaged storage areas containing large quantities of raw materials, apparel, and product samples belonging to exporters. The statement said that "air traffic has begun to return to normal, allowing us to resume operations on this route." The United Arab Emirates (UAE) observed unprecedented rainfall on Tuesday, marking the highest recorded rainfall in the last 75 years since climate records started in 1949.
