Wu Xichun is a professor at the College of Energy of the Chengdu University of Technology and an expert in geology. In the early 1970s, while conducting a geological mapping survey in the northwestern part of Sichuan Province, Wu unexpectedly discovered a reef group formed by Triassic siliceous hexactinellid sponges. Since then, he has devoted himself to the study on sponge reefs for nearly five decades. In order to study foreign literature, Wu mastered English, Russian, and German, and taught himself Latin, Greek, and Old French. He spent years conducting tens of times of on-site investigations at the discovery area to obtain more accurate research results and brought back dozens of pounds of fossils by himself. Business storyteller Shiroyama dies at 79

TOKYO, Japan - Saburo Shiroyama (in photo taken in May 2003), a leading Japanese writer of business and biographical novels, died on March 22 of interstitial lung disease at a hospital in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, his agent said. He was 79. Brought up in Nagoya, Shiroyama, whose real name is Eiichi Sugiura, pioneered a style of business novel featuring inside stories of corporate Japan in the early 1970s, and also authored a number of books often modeled on existing personalities.

TOKYO, Japan - Former state minister Toshio Komoto (file photo), a heavyweight in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party during the 1970s and early 1980s, died of heart failure May 24. He was 89. Komoto, who was elected to the House of Representatives 17 times since 1949 from Hyogo Prefecture, retired from politics in 1996 for health reasons.

Yuezhou fan dates back to the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The fan, having a history of about 400 years, is one of the most famous fans in China for its delicacy. Using fine bamboo as its framework, ox horn as the nail, and Xuan paper as the cover, the fan goes through 72 complicated procedures before done, while the making of framework requires most exquisite and skillful work. The crafts of making Yuezhou fan was listed in the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritages in 2021. Liu Zhengwen, 70 years old, a provincial intangible cultural heritage inheritor of Yuezhou fan, has been engaged in the crafts for 56 years. Enrolled into a Yueyang fan making factory in the 1970s, Liu witnessed himself the declining of the fan factory with the popularity of electric fans and air conditioners.
