New Komeito's Sawa found dead in dorm of heart failure

Japan's JDS Chiyoda joins rescue submarine drill

SINGAPORE - Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force rescue submarine JDS Chiyoda on Oct. 2 joins the navies of the United States, South Korea and Singapore in the first multilateral submarine rescue exercise in the western Pacific region. The 13-day exercise, code-named ''Exercise Pacific Reach 2000,'' began early in the day in the South China Sea, and involves four ships, four submarines and 600 personnel.

SYDNEY, Australia - The Japanese women's marathon trio, billed as the strongest ever sent to the Olympics, run together early in the race at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney on Sept. 24. Miyazawa shows design of 2,000 yen bill

TOKYO, Japan - Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa shows on Oct. 29 the design of a 2,000 yen bill which will be issued by July next year to mark the year 2000. The front of the bill depicts the Shureimon gates of Shuri Castle on the outskirts of Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. The other side depicts a scene from the ''Tale of Genji,'' the Japanese classic written in the early 11th century by court lady Murasaki Shikibu.

The returnees on board the 4,900-ton ferry Salvia Maru of Tokai Kisen Co. included those returning permanently or temporarily, as well as construction workers and officials involved in rebuilding the island.
