China - Shanghai - Sino-Japanese incident 1937 (The Battle of Shanghai) - The Chinese position near a bridge over the creek on the Woosung Road in East Shanghai. The Battle of Shanghai was the first of the twenty-two major engagements fought between the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) of the Republic of China (ROC) and the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) of the Empire of Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the entire war. As pictured on this card, Chinese soldiers had to rely primarily on small-caliber weapons in their defense of the city, against the overwhelming onslaught from air, naval, and ground forces of the Japanese.
