Owaku-dani Valley

Owaku-dani Valley

Owakudani is the crater formed by the erruption of Mt. Hakone. Until the beginning of Meiji, it was called Ohjigoku (Big Hell) and was believed to a place where spirits dwell. When Emperor and Empress Meiji spent time at Naraya Hotel of Miyanoshita in 1873, they thought it was unpleasant to have hell nearby, and therefore Ojigoku was renamed Owakudani. Some people are visible. The mountain on the left is Kanmuridake.==Date:unknown, Place:Hakone, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number47‐15‐0]
