TOKYO, Japan - Nikon Corp. has developed what it says is the world's first digital camera with a built-in function allowing users to transmit image data wirelessly to printers and personal computers. The Coolpix P1 -- 9.1 centimeters by 6.0 cm by 3.9 cm -- can transmit image data to a PC up to 30 meters away from the user, Nikon said, adding that it will put the camera on the market Sept. 23 for about 50,000 yen.

Casio said it made its palm-sized camera smaller by using a ceramic lens for the first time. It said the ceramic lens has a higher refractive index than glass lens. The camera is a 3.2 mega pixel digital camera equipped with a 2.8 times optical zoom lens. It measures 88 x 57 x 16.7 millimeters. The thinnest part is 14.2 mm.

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the LUMIX DMC-LC5, one of the two high-speed digital still cameras (DSC) which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will begin marketing Oct. 27 as the first products under an alliance with Leica Camera AG of Germany. The LUMIX DMC-LC5 is equipped with Leica's DC Vario-Summicron lens and can shoot up to eight frames per second. Matsushita said Sept. 17 it has not suggested a retail price for the new product.

KASHIHARA, Japan - A mural of a legendary red bird has been discovered in an ancient burial mound in Asuka, Nara Prefecture, archaeologists said April 3. The painting on the south side of the chamber inside the mound was photographed using a digital camera. This is Japan's first ancient chamber in which legendary animals have been found on the four walls -- north, south, east, and west. The photo was provided by the Asuka village office.
